![]() This is due to getting used to what you are hearing and sometimes it is highly subjective either by style, by genre, by historical time (decade), etc. Most mixes, even professional ones lack definition/separation, "air" or whatever you want to call that clarity. I have a reamp box, but no cab, and am currently trying to find a way to get it to work with no cab. It's hard to get the right amount though because you still want to keep the transients and punch in the mix, but then again if you have even slightly too much of that your drums will sound plasticky as hell, even if they're based on real recorded samples.įor gtrs I've got a physical tube amp and cab sim. ![]() You guys ever get that, you mix like a MADMAN for weeks in a row, just produce dozens of versions of the same song, and then your body and mind are just depleted and can't be screwed to even think of the word Reaper ?Īnyways I'll probably return tomorrow and yeah more compression on the drums sounds good. Gosh, haven't gone back to my Reaper session in days. If you've got audio tracks to work with, I like the Audio Assault stuff a LOT for these situations, their multiband compressors and exciters seem purpose built for this kind of thing, and practically free with the holiday sale right now. Here's one right here:Īs to your guitars, if you're using amp sims, so easy to just reamp, I do so love that, play with tones that inspire you, instantly reamp that performance to something that works in the mix. A good "glue" compressor or two in the right place(s) is kinda what that's for, make things play nice together. Also maybe look at the good compression threads here. But a dull, flat track? Soo hard to make sound good. Sooo easy to squash that back with compression and EQ and reverb, or maybe more subtly there are plugs designed to move things "back" in the mix. Tough for me cause I hate bright/harsh when I'm playing. Because you can dial that out easy enough, but it's much more difficult/impossible in my limited experience to add it/get it back effectively/convincingly. #1 top tip (which I hope one day to actually realize and take my own advice lol): Make sure EVERYTHING is bright, maybe even verging on harsh in tracking.

It’s a simple matter to press Alt+PageDown to expand the segment (or Alt+PageUp to shrink the segment, if you want the segment smaller). The fact that you’re working within Word means that problems become apparent as you work sometimes a segment may only contain half a sentence as there’s a full stop in the middle, or a colon. It’s easy to create glossaries on the fly (highlight the term in the source segment, then press Crtl+Alt+T, then repeat with the term in the target segment) and you can use up to three glossaries of your choice, but only one translation memory (plus a BTM, a large translation memory that you can use for concordance searches, but not add to as you work). There are a few easy-to-remember keystrokes: Alt+Down to move to the next segment, Alt+End to end your translation, Alt+Home to go back to where you last left off… The manual is straightforward and there’s an excellent Yahoo group for support. As I’ve said, it operates within Word, so you aren’t faced with a different working environment from the outset. That was another huge boost as it introduced me to the delights of concordance searching and untranslatable attributes, all concepts I’d heard of but had no real understanding of what they were or how you applied them! Since then, I’ve learned as I’ve progressed, teaching myself as I’ve needed to know something, be it aligning previous translations to stock translation memories, building glossaries, or discovering the delights of Pandora’s Box to help Wordfast work smoothly with Dragon voice recognition software.įor me, Wordfast is extremely intuitive, ideal for translators who aren’t particularly technologically-minded. After a year or so, I attended an intermediate training course run by John di Rico in Nice in the autumn of 2007, following on from the ProZ conference in Aix. ![]() I’d already downloaded the (free) trial software before attending the workshop and managed to do a test translation or two, so, armed with my new-found knowledge, I bought the full version of the software soon after my return and I haven’t looked back since!įor me, the beauty of Wordfast was very much that you could learn on the job admittedly only at a very basic level initially, but you can achieve good results without any formal training. After the two days, my mind was made up: Déja Vu would have been my first preference, but was too expensive for a freelancer not yet working full-time, Trados (Workbench) was far too complicated and way out of my comfort zone (in those days), but Wordfast seemed to offer the best of both worlds – reasonably priced, relatively straightforward to use and operating in a familiar Word environment. It was a fascinating opportunity to spend an intensive weekend seeing what all the fuss was about – and an invaluable chance to try all three tools hands-on for myself AND to get to grips with the basics of CAT tools. However, my interest was piqued by an ITI workshop run by Michael Benis back in 2006: an introduction to CAT tools, looking specifically at Trados, Wordfast and Déja Vu. I didn’t think I translated particularly repetitive texts and I certainly received many documents by fax (or, heaven forbid, by post!) that didn’t remotely lend themselves to electronic processing in a computer-assisted translation environment. In fact, I used to dictate my translations to be typed up by the typing pool, but that’s an entirely different story… I was quite happy with my translation workflow, but when I got divorced in 2005 and started to work towards translating full-time, talk of translation memory and what it could do to help translators’ productivity started to filter through to my not particularly receptive ears. I’ve been translating in a professional capacity for 31 years now, most of which have been without translation memory of any kind, hard though that may be for newcomers to the profession to imagine. These are the only tools I’ve used in earnest, so whilst I’ve heard great things about Déja Vu and MemoQ, I can’t possibly comment. ![]() I’ve been meaning to write about CAT tools for some time now, but before you all shoot me down in flames, I should start off by saying that I don’t claim to be a technological wizard! For a complete rundown of the build, here are the links for the blog series for ease of access: Intro, PCBs, Panel, Build Guide, Mechanical, Pico/TX816 IO code, and finally usage. The video demo (embedded below) shows off the system running a very 80s-sounding rendition of Holst’s famous ‘Jupiter’ from the planet series, and we all agree it sounds pretty sweet. The firmware for the Pico part of the system can be found on the firmware GitHub. Both PCBs, including a PCB-based front panel, were developed with KiCAD. Also sitting on this PCB is the GY-PCM5102 I 2S DAC, and the MIDI connectors needed to connect to the system controller. wanted to emulate the look and feel of the original TX816 aesthetic, developing a custom PCB handling the user interface for four of the eight channels, and a second acting as an interface to the Raspberry Pi using a Pico. But with the power of modern hackable electronics, and the MiniDexed firmware running bare-metal on a Raspberry Pi getting access to a compatible synth doesn’t have to break the bank. This beast of a synth was used by the cool bands of the 80s as well as TV studios, and ownership of the original machine is an expensive investment. You must keep the hand you had at the start of that turn, but each other player gets one final turn to draw and discard. If at the start of your turn, you believe that your hand is not the lowest and that at least one other player will be unable to beat your hand even if they are allowed one more turn, you can knock instead of drawing a card. However, if you draw the top card of the stock, you are free to discard the card that you drew onto the discard pile, leaving your hand unchanged. You must keep the card you took and discard one of the cards that was previously in your hand. Note that if you choose to take the top card from the discard pile, it is illegal to discard the same card, leaving the position unchanged. discarding one card face up on top of the discard pile.drawing the top card either from the stock pile (without showing it to the other players) or from the discard pile. The player to dealer's left begins and the turn to play passes clockwise around the table. During play, the discard pile is always kept "squared up" so that only the top card is visible and available to be taken. The next card is turned face up on the table to start the discard pile, and the remaining undealt cards are placed face down next to it to form the draw pile or stock. The cards are shuffled and are dealt out one at a time, starting with the player to dealer's left and continuing clockwise until everyone has a hand of three cards. The turn to deal passes on clockwise after each hand. The maximum hand value is 31, consisting of the ace and two ten-point cards in the same suit.Įxamples: K- 8- 5: value 23 (sum of all 3 cards)Ī- 6- 4: value 11 (the ace is worth more than the spades)ĭetermine the first dealer in any manner you desire. If you have three different suits the value of your hand is the value of the highest card in it. If only two cards are in the same suit you can add those, or use the value of the odd card if it is higher than the sum of the other two. So if you have three cards of the same suit, you can add up all three. The value of a three card hand is calculated by adding up the value of the cards held in any one suit. For scoring hands, the Ace is worth 11 points, the Kings, Queens, and Jacks are worth 10, and all other cards are worth their pip value.
